Mawazine Festival in mid-May
Musicians from across the globe will come together in Rabat once again in May for the 2008 Mawazine World Rhythms festival. Jazz and gypsy music will be this year's focus, but listeners will hear music from many other genres over the course of the eight-day event. This year's festival, to be held from May 16th-24th, is characterised by renewal, both in its programming and its sponsoring organisation. Mohammed Mounir Majidi, special advisor to King Mohammed VI, has taken over responsibilities as head of the festival, replacing outgoing director and AMC founding President Abdeljalil Hjomri. The organisers explained that the Mawazine Festival has, over the years, placed emphasis on diversity and plurality in response to all tastes and views. The event promotes the values of unity, tolerance, love, security and peace, through the presence of artists from different countries, ages and languages. In addition, there will be dozens of performances by musicians from Europe, Latin America, the Maghreb and the Middle East. Some of the artists include US jazz singer Dee Dee Bridgewater; Ziggy Marley, son of Bob Marley from Jamaica; Cheb Belal from Algeria; Amr Diab; Nancy Ajram; Asala Nasry; Saber al-Rubai; Diana Haddad; Fadl Shaker; and Natacha Atlas from the Middle East, as well as famous Moroccan singers such as Hayat Al Idrissi, Saeeda Fekri, Fatima Tihihite, Latifa Raafat, Nass El Ghiwane; Jil Jilala and Lemchaheb; and hip hop groups such as Darga, Fnaire, H-Kayne and Hoba Hoba Spirit, as well as a number of artists from Latin America. Amr Diab eliminated from ‘Hala February Festival’
The organizing committee of the Annual Hala (Hello)February Music Festival in Kuwait has announced that Egyptian singer Amr Diab will not participate in this year’s events. The committee stated that Diab was not nominated alongside other singers who will take part in the festival due to the fact that he demanded a wage of 200 thousand US dollar for his performance; an amount the committee felt was too high. The committee added that Diab’s wage for last year’s performance was 80 thousand US dollars only and the enormous increase, in addition to the singer’s conditions that he would only participate if Egyptian singers Tamer Husni and Mohammad Hamaqi were not invited without revealing the reasons for such a request.Negotiations are currently being held with other Egyptian singers, who are as popular as Amr, to participate in the events of this year’s festivals, according to the Kuwaiti based daily, Al Qabas.

Amr the Ambassador
Egyptian singer Amr Diab has always been amazingly successful in everything he does.He received three American Music Awards and is known as the artist with the biggest foreign fan base. He is also currently filming a movie with the provisional title of ‘El Motamared’ that loosely tells the story of his life. However, does all this make him eligible for the role of ‘Good Will Ambassador’ for the United Nations? Indeed, there has been a lot of talk about Amr’s nomination to take on this specific role, but nothing has been confirmed yet.Egyptian stars who have been ‘Good Will Ambassadors’ in previous times include Adel Imam and Mahmoud Kabil. Both of these stars were suitable candidates. Adel Imam has been known as a charitable person and has made amazing movies about corruption and the Egyptian political system. Mahmoud Kabil is fluent in English, Arabic, French, Hebrew, and Italian making him a great link between Egypt and the rest of the world. What qualities, in your opinion, does Amr Diab have to make him a suitable ‘Good Will Ambassador’?
